Greg Davis

Greg L. Davis is one of the world's leading aerial photographers and aviation photojournalists. He has been photographing and reporting on aviation for 20 years. He proudly served eight years in the United States Air Force as a photographer and later as a photojournalist. He earned his aircrew wings while assigned to Combat Camera. He participated in combat missions over Bosnia, Kosovo and the Middle East, and after Sept. 11, 2001, he flew combat air patrol missions in both the F-15 and F-16, the two primary aircraft types flying CAP. He is the only photographer to have CAP missions in both types in his logbook.

Greg says, "My interest in aviation started at an early age as I used to go to Bergstrom AFB, Texas with my grandparents. My grandmother would do the shopping while my grandfather, a retired USAF Lieutenant Colonel and Master Navigator, would take me to the point nearest to the end of the runway. At that time you could practically drive all the way up to the 'last chance' section where the jets were given a last look-over by the ground crews before they took the runway. I used to wave at every F-4 Phantom that taxied by. Few of the crewmembers waved back, but there was one guy who took just a few seconds to look up, look directly at me, open his hand and give me a big wave. It may sound ridiculous, but that guy captured my heart with his opened hand." Greg concludes that he's been 'hooked' on all things aviation ever since. He continues, "Now, one of the things I'm especially conscious of when doing something aviation-related is making sure that I'm working to capture, either visually or conceptually, the majesty of flight... and inspire the next kid looking at my photos in a magazine. Sometimes that inspiration may come from me being the one taking a minute to wave at someone while I'm taxing to last chance somewhere while flying myself or for a story. That's very important to me."

Greg is a graduate of the prestigious Military Photojournalist Course at Syracuse University and also earned a Bachelor's degree in Communication (Journalism track) from the University of Maryland, University College.

Greg currently works closely with Vertical covering rotary-wing subjects from the military, law-enforcement and civilian flight agencies. Additionally, he shoots and writes for many other well-known aviation interest magazines worldwide. Assignment photography for air show performers and aircraft manufacturers rounds out his immersion in aviation. Greg states, "In my career I've worked with magazines and publishers, large and small, from around the world." He says, "I've found a perfect fit working with Vertical because their passion for treating people fairly and producing great products matches mine exactly. Plus, we share the same type of reputation as ambassadors for aviation."

Greg is a civilian fixed-wing pilot and currently lives in North Carolina with his wife and two daughters. He runs Focal Plane Imagery with long-time friend and contributing photographer Chris A. Neill (see www.focalplaneimagery.com).
